Real Life Cookie Monster

I am a real life cookie monster.

My Grandma H made the best cookies.

She had a talent for baking.

But the best cookies she made were her classic Jam Jam cookies.

The recipe had been passed down from my Great Grandma on my Grandpa’s side.

Jam Jam’s are my favourite cookie of all time.

There is nothing like them.

The cookies themselves are actually quite plain but taste of lovely vanilla.

And the jam sandwiched in between the two cookies needs to be a specific kind to get the taste just right.

I believe it was pin cherry or even cranberry jam.

The jam makes the cookies oh so soft that it melts away in your mouth.

Mmm… I can just taste them right now…

People have tried to duplicate Grandma’s Jam Jam cookies.

My mom, although a great baker herself, tried once and failed.

I have tried, and failed.

My brother does a pretty good job when he makes them.

But the only person to really come close is my Aunt J (my dad’s sister).

Aunt J visits about once a year.

But each time she’s here she tries to whip up a batch of these yummy cookies and leave a few with each of us before she leaves.

A childhood memory that my family will never let me live down…

One night I was having a sleep over at my grandparent’s house.

In the morning, I asked Grandma H if I could have a jam jam.

She said I could have just one.

I went into the cupboard where the jam jams were kept and grabbed one.

I ate it slowly.

Taking in every last little bit of the decadent treat enjoying it to its fullest.

But then I got greedy.

I needed more of the sweet stuff.

I am not too sure where my grandparents went.

Grandma may have been tiding up the house and Grandpa may have stepped outside for a few moments.

Ah, the perfect opportunity for a heist!

I went back into the kitchen and to the cupboard.

My chubby fingers snatched a couple more jam jams from their container.

The PJs I was wearing had a pocket on the chest and I stuffed a cookie inside.

Then, I quickly ran into to the garage (turned porch/office for my grandpa).

I hid behind Grandpa’s chair and started nibbling away on the cookies.

A few moments later I was found!

I quickly stuffed the last part of the last cookie into my mouth.

Grandpa caught me.

“You little jigger!” he exclaimed while laughing at me.

It was an expression he used frequently, somewhat a term of endearment in our lives.

He did not get upset. Neither did Grandma.

They thought it was hilarious.

And I was left with the cookie crumbs in my pocket and the happy memory of my first theft.

Jam Jams make appearances at several family functions.

One of them being my cousin’s wedding.

Below is a photo of my brother and I re-enacting the moment Grandpa caught me red handed.

Great story! My Grandmother used to mad a chocolate layer cake from scratch. While everyone of us has tried to make this cake we cannot get itright. We used to fight over the cake. I however did not care for the top I only liked the bottom. So being what I thought was smart, left the top for everyone and ate the entire bottom. Which had a custard. I got away with it until Grandmother went to cut it. Boy did I get in trouble for that.
