Boogie Board Review
Back in about 2008 when researching green ideas for our local Kinette club I unexpectedly came across the Boogie Board.
And not the kind of Boogie Board you are thinking.
This Boogie Board could eliminate the use of memo pads, sticky notes, scrap paper! It can save money, save trees, and save paper. I was hooked on its promises!
The original Boogie Board LCD eWriter has an 8.5 inch screen. It is super light weighing in at only 4 oz and extremely thin (only 1/8 inch).
I really disliked how many sticky note pads we went through for grocery lists and whatnot in our home. There had to be an eco-friendly option out there to help save paper. The Boogie Board became the perfect solution for me and my family.
At our next Kinette meeting I mentioned the Boogie Boards and it was met with mixed reviews. Some indicated that they did not see themselves carrying the Boogie Board around, especially in a grocery store. However, that did not dissuaded me (or a couple others) from ordering one.
My Boogie Board arrived and I proudly displayed it on my fridge using the magnets provided. Our family used it to keep track of groceries we forgot to pick up, appointments we needed to be reminded of, or for leaving special messages to each other.
We had our Boogie Board for about 4 years before it no longer worked. The messages we were writing on it were no longer visible.
A few months ago I was chatting on Twitter (I really do love Twitter). I noticed someone that I follow was chatting with the makers of the Boogie Board and how they absolutely loved the idea behind the product. I jumped into their conversation (rude I know) and I added my two cents on the Boogie Board. A few tweets in I expressed how sad I was that our board was no longer operational. The person behind the Boogie Board Twitter account told me to contact them and they would be happy to send a replacement. I was so excited.
I waited a few weeks and finally the package arrived!
I was shocked to see that not only had the Boogie Board representative sent the original Boogie Board eWriter but they had also sent one of their newest items, the Rip.
Now, the Rip can do a few more things that the original Boogie Board can not. The Rip can actually save what you write or draw on your screen to memory. The Rip is like a virtual notepad.
The notes (or drawings) saved on the Rip are stored as high-resolution vector Portable Document files (PDF). The number of images that can be saved to memory will vary depending on the size of the PDF files. If the PDFs are an average size, you may be able to save up to 200 files before you need to upload them to your computer. The Rip is also rechargeable and comes with a USB cord to connect it to your computer.
Users can download Adobe Illustrator to edit the PDF files quickly and easily. The Boogie Board Rip can also integrate with various Rip Virtual Desktop Companion software. Evernote can be used easily access and organize your files. MyScript OCR will convert your handwritten notes to text files. If you are giving a presentation you could use Virtual Whiteboard to project what you are writing/drawing on your Boogie Board in real time and you can also save those images to your computer while doing so.
Elementary students could use Boogie Boards at home or in class to learn various skills such as practicing their printing/cursive writing or math. In fact, I used our Boogie Board Original with our three year old to try to learn his alphabet. He thought it was pretty neat. But in the end he just really preferred to doodle on it. Thus, the Boogie Board is a perfect tool for a budding artist! My oldest son loves to play tic-tac-toe on it or hangman.
The Rip could be the perfect companion for any high school or university student. I know I would have loved to have had the Rip with me when I was in university. It would have saved a ton of money spent on loose-leaf and binders! Plus, it is a lot lighter to carry around than binders. I know I disliked having to lug around tons of textbooks and papers from class to class across a huge campus.
One of other features I love about the Rip is that it has a place to safely store its stylus. The Original 8.5 does not and as such, we lost our stylus somewhere in our house a few weeks after receiving our Boogie Boards.
I think just about anybody could find a use for these fantastic eWriters.
I want to thank those behind Boogie Boards for sending me these two items. Our family really appreciated the thought behind the kind gesture. I know there was no obligation of a review but I wanted to let all of my readers know how awesome a product Boogie Boards truly are and what a great company Improv Electronics is.
* I have learned that the Boogie Board Rip LCD eWriter has now been discontinued. It has now been replaced by the amazing Boogie Board Sync 9.7 which features wireless technology. And it is now on my Christmas wishlist!
