My Brush With Celebrity

Have you ever had a brush with a celebrity?

I had never been to a real concert before. I don’t really count the time Sweet Hearts of the Rodeo opened up for Highway 101 when they came to the city located 30 minutes from my hometown. I was barely a teen when I went to that concert with my cousins. Honestly, I did not even listen to country at the time but I thought it would be fun to check out.

I definitely do not count the time my grandmother (my mom’s mother) took my brother and I to a Glass Tiger concert during the Red River Exhibition in Winnipeg in 1988. Glass Tiger? Yeah, I had no clue who they were or what songs they sang. But I have pictures to prove I was there and that I saw them live.

As luck would have it an extra ticket was available to see Gwen Stefani in concert. Someone had backed out and my cousin asked me if I would be interested in going.

Gwen Stefani?

Are you kidding me?

Of course I was in!

I was a huge Gwen fan. I loved No Doubt growing up (and still do). They were one of my absolute favourite bands. And now, she was touring across Canada promoting her second solo album in The Sweet Escape Tour!

Of course with travelling and whatnot, I had a wee bit of anxiety. But my cousin was there with me. And my other cousin was meeting us there. I knew the other girls we were travelling with so it made it a bit easier and my anxiety subsided. I just went with the flow and enjoyed the whole weekend and experience.

A few hours before the concert we decided to stop by one of the major malls in the city to do a wee bit of shopping. After browsing through many stores I decided to hang back and catch my breath. So, I stood outside of one of the stores my friends were in.

A few minutes went by. I looked up and noticed this big group of people walking by. The group didn’t seem to quite fit in the landscape of the mall. There were a few eccentric people mixed in the crowd. (And by eccentric I mean this in the nicest way possible.) One man really stood out from the rest. He was quite tall, a little loud and had a big mohawk.

They walked right by me and I paid no real attention after that.

Then all of a sudden an employee from the store I was standing across from bolted from the store and ran after the crowd that had just passed.

A few of her coworkers came to the front of the store to watch and so I asked one of them,

“What is she doing?”

His reply was, “oh apparently some rapper named Acorn just walked by and she is trying to get his autograph.”

Me, “you mean Akon?”

HIm, “yeah, that’s him!”

My next response, “he’s opening for the Gwen Stefani concert I am going to tonight!”

Yes, Akon walked right past me and I didn’t even notice! Well, I noticed his entourage but not him. In my defence, now that I am older I do not watch music videos. I had heard his music and loved it but I had never seen a picture of him before.

When my cousins and friends returned from their shopping, I told them what had happened and they were shocked.

Plus, they were disappointed that I hadn’t run after him myself to ask for his autograph.

And the man with the mohawk, he was Akon’s DJ and he was the first to appear on the stage when the whole concert began! It was so surreal.

I served Sidney Crosby at Starbucks once and didn’t even notice until he had sat down. At least that meant I treated him like a regular customer though. :)

wow that is pretty cool! I’m not familiar with him but I did have a friend in school that would have killed for Glass Tiger tickets! lol I dont think I’ve ever had a spontaneous brush with fame, but once I met Paige Davis from TLC’s Trading Spaces after she performed on broadway and Mike Holmes was at a local store one summer so went down to meet him and of course backstage with Pink in December. But no surprise sightings like you had!

Sounds like fun – a concert and a brush with a celebrity in the same day! I am not very celebrity-lucky – I have never met anyone famous. I did have an audience with the Dalai Lama once – maybe that’s my celebrity dose for this life!

Well, being in the presence of the Dalai Lama is something to brag about! That is great!

The concert was amazing. I had the best time. We had seats in like the 7th or 8th row on the floor but my cousin warned me that that does not happen often at all! hehe! I can’t wait to go to another one someday.

I’ve got to meet some celebs over the past year at events, but nothing out of the blue like this… it would be so exciting! :)

Wait! That’s a lie. A few years back we had tix to a movie premiere screening and who sat next to us, but Halifax’s own Ellen Page. That was pretty cool.
