… and in with the new!

HP Canada asked me if I would like to test out their new HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer and I eagerly accepted the challenge. I have used various HP products throughout the years and I have always been more than satisfied in the performance of their products. Our old HP Pavilion computer lasted for seven years before it began to be too slow to run multiple programs. (The old printer above has also been around for at about five years.)

When the HP Photosmart 7520 arrived I was a little shocked at the size. I began to unpack it and started to feel a little overwhelmed. I swear I felt like I was setting up the Cadillac of computer printers.

Technology has sure come a long way over the years. My first printer was a dot matrix that used continuous form paper! Remember those? I guess I am really dating myself here.

Anyway, back to the amazing HP Photosmart 7520. This is a printer everyone will want to have in their home. Not only can you print fantastic photos and documents but you can also scan, fax, copy and access the web all while just using the touch screen menu included on the actual printer. What boggles my mind is that you don’t even really need a computer to use this machine. It acts like a mini computer itself.

Since the printer can be set-up to your wireless network you can scan and share your photos without your computer. Further, located at the front of the printer are slots for your memory cards and USB flash drives so that you can print photos directly from your storage devices.

Now – I won’t lie to you – setting up this baby took a wee bit of time. I probably spent close to an hour to get everything up and working as it should. I may have even sweated a little. Oh, and I broke a nail. But I did not mind as I was too excited to see what this printer could do.

What I truly loved and appreciated were the video tutorials and demos that were provided to assist the user during the set-up. A video tutorial showed me how to correctly insert each of the ink cartridges. Usually when you buy a new printer you have to buy the ink cartridges separately but the five ink cartridges are included to get you up and running immediately. These separate cartridges are great because then you only need to replace that specific colour when it runs out, thus producing less waste. Another video tutorial that I found useful showed me how to print onto the 4 x 6 glossy photo paper that was also included. After the sample picture was done printing I could not believe my eyes. The quality of the photo was amazing. The colours are so vibrant! This printer almost does a better job than our local photo lab.

(To further test the printer, I scanned the sample photo and the
second photo above is the result. The quality is excellent!)

What I was most looking forward to testing out and using with this new printer is the ability to print wirelessly. My home “office” is located in the recreational room in our basement which is right next to the kid’s play area.

Anytime I wanted to print I would have to make a quick trip from our main floor and enter the “dungeon.” It was such a pain. First world problem, I know. Obviously, the old printer did not have the ability to connect to our wireless network. Often I would email myself the document needing to be printed which was located on my laptop upstairs (or save it to a USB flash drive) and then, I would go down to the basement to print said document off using the desktop computer. Connecting the HP Photosmart 7520 printer to the wireless network was a cinch. I did not even have to use a phone cord. Now, I can print from anywhere in my home!

During the set-up process you are asked to create an account at HPConnected.com. At HP Connected you can upload photos to print, share them, download more apps for your printer, and manage your HP devices. After updating the HP web services on the printer a page started to print automatically that included a printer code. I logged into HP Connected, added my new device and entered the printer code. Doing this enables you to ePrint from any device, wirelessly! You will be given an email address for your printer (which you can personally customize) and you use that email address print from your tablet or even your smartphone! How neat is that? (Just wish I had a tablet and/or smartphone to test it out!)

You may be asking yourself “but how can I use the HP Photosmart 7520 to Organize My Life?” This is where things get even more exciting!

I highly recommend you check out the website snapfish. I never knew this site existed until I started working with HP Canada. At snapfish you can print photo books, calendars, greeting cards, photo gifts (throws, mugs, mouse pads, etc.), canvases, etc. The possibilities are endless!

If you are like me and have a tendency to not print out your digital photos for years, snapfish will be the perfect solution for you. You can quickly and easily create a photo book to document the passing years. Why not get even more creative and make a book specifically for each of your children (i.e. Big Boy’s Adventures from 2007-2009!)? Did you go on a special family trip to DisneyWorld? Make a photo book to specially commemorate that fun family time.

Snapfish has greatly helped me get organized on the home front. Using the supplies provided above from HP Canada, I printed out a meal planner, a chore chart, a yearly calendar and a weekly calendar from snapfish. I am going to be most organized mother in the whole world! (OK, maybe that is going a wee bit too far. I may be the most organized mother on the block.)

I placed the meal planner on our fridge so our entire family can see exactly what we will be having for supper each night.

Big Boy has been assigned a few chores to complete during the week.

And if you are planner like myself, the calendars are being used to keep track of all of our family activities. For example, Big Boy has hockey practices and games scattered throughout the entire week. It can be overwhelming trying to figure out what rink he needs to be at and at what time. So, the weekly planner is a lifesaver in this department. I have also written down any family appointments (doctor, dentist, hair, etc.) as well as the husband’s shift schedule for work. He works an odd shift schedule so it is hard to figure out when he has days off or when he needs to be sleeping in late due to his night shifts. With these calendars I have that information right at my fingers tips.

The yearly calendar comes in handy when planning things in advance such as family vacations, birthdays and anniversaries. I have it located in a binder for quick and immediate access!

There is so much more I could say about the HP Photosmart 7520 printer. It can perform a multitude of functions I have not even have had the chance to mention here. For example, did you know that the printer also includes free apps like 7 Day Menu Planner, Angry Birds, Garfield and National Geographic for Kids? I subscribed to the Garfield app and it will print off activity sheets every couple of days for my kids to colour and just plain ol’ have fun with. The printer is also environmentally friendly. It is Energy Star qualified, can automatically print and copy double sided pages, and the ink cartridges can be recycled.

I am so looking forward to using this printer even more throughout the weeks and years to come. Thank you HP Canada!

Great review! We have the same printer! My hubby set ours up for me, it didn’t take him long but he’s also a computer tech so that’s like a second language to him! It would have taken me hours too figuring everything from plugging to networking! I absolutely love the print you made, so colourful! I also love the printouts on snapfish! The calendar ones are now my go-to print out! :)

The scanning quality is exquisite and so is the original print. I too remember dot matrix printers and would have been a bit intimidated if it weren’t for your assurance that I could do it myself. I’ve had enough of entering my husbands dungeon, this printer is now on my wish list. Thorough and honest review.
