Put Away for Safekeeping
Do you ever put something away for safekeeping only to not be able to find it once you need it?
This sadly happens to me a lot. More than I care to admit but I will loudly and proudly here.
I was hired a few years ago to format a safety manual for someone who had previously hired me to create a website for her home business. Having a repeat client was big for me. It meant I was doing something right.
Anyway, the client came to my house to go over what expectations she had for this particular job. She provided me with a small USB drive of all of the files I would need to update for her. I knew that this USB was precious and that I needed to safeguard it from any potential harm such as my kids finding it and destroying it or worse, losing it.
At the time we had a desk/computer armoire where all of my computer equipment and papers were stored. As we had a toddler wandering around and a very curious preschooler, we had a child proof lock to use to lock up the armoire.
After transferring the files from the USB drive to my computer for safe measure I decided to stash away the USB drive I was given in what I considered a “safe place.”
A few weeks went by and I finally completed the job. The client was more satisfied with my work. And then it happened… she asked for her USB drive back. Well, do you think that I could find the darn thing anywhere? I looked up and down, all around for it. I searched for an entire week and still could not find it. I swore up and down that my pre-schooler must have got his hands on to it. Little did I know that I was the ultimate culprit.
I eventually had to apologize to my client and tell her what had happened. Luckily, it was not an expensive item. I replaced the USB drive for her and loaded it with the original files I was given along with the ones that I created to complete the job.
It wasn’t until months later that I found the USB key. We had sold the computer armoire a while back and had moved the desktop computer and printer downstairs to a newer desk. My printer ran out of ink and I needed to replace the cartridges. Upon opening up the printer to access the cartridges, guess what popped out?
THE USB DRIVE!
I am not even kidding you.
Who puts a USB key away inside a printer for safekeeping?
Me, that’s who!
Anyway, I thought about this story the other night as I had once again put some items away for safekeeping that I couldn’t find. As luck turns out, it did not take me months to find the items, only a couple of hours. Silly me, I had walked past them about 10 times before I noticed where they were put… by me.
